Be safe, not sorry
Until you have had a professional look at your situation, treat all water-impacted areas in the home as potentially contaminated. It’s especially important to keep children and pets out of these areas as they may be more susceptible to any potential toxins or contaminants.

Protect valuable documents
Books and important documents should be put in a freezer until you have a plan in place to dry them. This prevents mildew growth.

Don’t dry a closed room
Heat and moisture equals a recipe for mildew. Make sure water-damaged areas are well-ventilated to prevent mold and mildew setting in. This will also reduce the risk of damage from moisture expansion.
